Excitement is in the air in West Huntsville as the City officially breaks ground on a brand-new recreation center in District 5. This marks the beginning of a year-long construction project that promises to provide residents with an exceptional space to stay active, connect with neighbors, and enjoy a variety of recreational activities.

Located at 150 Martin Road, just west of Zierdt Road, the new recreation center will span 27,350 square feet and feature a thoughtful, community-focused design.

It draws inspiration from the popular Mark Russell Recreation Center on Taylor Road—one of Huntsville Parks & Recreation’s busiest venues.

The upcoming recreation center will boast a state-of-the-art gymnasium with two basketball courts, two volleyball courts, and three indoor pickleball courts.

For those who prefer the outdoors, there will be three additional pickleball courts, all nestled in beautifully landscaped surroundings.

District 5 Council Member John Meredith couldn’t contain his enthusiasm about the new recreation center in West Huntsville. “This center is exactly what our community needs,” he said.

“It’s going to address the growing demand for recreational opportunities and create a vibrant space where people of all ages can come together. I’m deeply grateful to the City Administration and my fellow Council members for their unwavering support in bringing this vision to life.”

When the center opens its doors next year, it will become the 15th recreational and community center in Huntsville, adding to the city’s impressive network of over 65 public parks.

Parks & Recreation Director James Gossett highlighted the importance of this project, saying, “This new center isn’t just another addition to our facilities—it’s a symbol of Huntsville’s commitment to providing accessible, high-quality recreational spaces for everyone. We want this center to be a place where sports, fitness, and community spirit thrive, helping to strengthen the bonds between our residents.”

As the project progresses, anticipation continues to build for the dynamic new hub that West Huntsville will soon call its own.

Expected to be completed by summer 2025, this vibrant center will offer residents a place to stay active, have fun, and forge lasting connections. The grand opening can’t come soon enough!
